PAKISTAN TO ESTABLISH JOINT EXPERT GROUP WITH CORNELL UNIVERSITY TO BOOST CLIMATE-RESILIENT AGRICULTURE

NEW YORK / ISLAMABAD — In a major step toward modernizing Pakistan’s agricultural landscape, the Federal Minister for Planning, Development & Special Initiatives, Prof. Ahsan Iqbal, held a high-level meeting at Cornell University’s Integrated School of Plant Sciences.

The discussions focused on driving innovation, enhancing crop yields, and implementing sustainable farming techniques under the umbrella of the government’s flagship URAAN Pakistan initiative.

Key Highlights of the Engagement

  • Applied Research & Innovation: Both sides explored how cutting-edge global research can be translated into practical, on-the-ground solutions for Pakistani farmers.
  • Climate Resilience: With climate change increasingly impacting crop cycles, the talks prioritized developing climate-resilient agricultural practices to safeguard national food security.
  • Value Chain Strengthening: Discussions aimed at improving agricultural supply chains to reduce post-harvest losses and boost international export value.

A Concrete Framework for the Future

To turn these discussions into actionable outcomes, both sides officially agreed to establish a Joint Expert Group. This group will be tasked with drafting a comprehensive framework to guide future institutional collaboration between Cornell University and Pakistan’s agricultural research bodies.

“Leveraging global partnerships and modern technology is crucial for transforming Pakistan from a consumption-led economy into an innovation-driven, productive, and prosperous nation.”

Prof. Ahsan Iqbal, Federal Minister for Planning

This partnership marks a significant milestone in Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to revitalize its agricultural sector, ensuring long-term economic stability and sustainability through world-class academic and scientific cooperation.
