ISLAMABAD — Pakistan’s critical textile and agricultural sectors are facing severe headwinds as escalating climate change severely impacts the national cotton crop. Extreme heatwaves, critical water scarcity, and prolonged dry spells have triggered a substantial decline in domestic cotton production, underscoring the immediate vulnerability of the country’s cash-crop economy.

Recent data highlights that despite government initiatives to stabilize acreage, environmental pressures have heavily suppressed crop performance. According to the International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC), Pakistan’s cotton production is projected to contract by roughly 18% to 900,000 tonnes for the 2026/27 season due to erratic weather patterns and heightened pest pressures.

Multi-Layered Challenges on the Field

The crisis is driven by interlinked environmental and market realities that are reshaping the agricultural landscape, particularly in major growing hubs like Punjab and Sindh:

  • Thermal Stress & Germination Failure: Unusually high temperatures during critical early sowing and flowering stages have stunted crop growth and degraded germination rates.
  • Severe Water Strain: Declining water tables and irregular canal supplies have left farmers struggling to meet the irrigation-heavy demands of traditional cotton varieties.
  • Alternative Crop Shift: Dissatisfied with volatile returns and escalating input costs (such as fuel and fertilizers), a growing number of farmers are shifting cultivation toward more climate-resilient or higher-margin alternatives, including corn, sugarcane, and rice.

A Call for Coordinated Adaptation

The reported downturn emphasizes that traditional farming methods are no longer sufficient against a shifting climate. Agricultural experts are warning that safeguarding the livelihoods of millions of rural farmers and protecting the country’s primary export sector—textiles—requires an immediate pivot toward modern agrarian frameworks.

Addressing these deep-seated challenges demands unified, fast-tracked cooperation between the public sector, agritech innovators, and local farming communities. Immediate priorities include accelerating the distribution of climate-resilient, heat-tolerant certified seed varieties, implementing smart water management tools like drip irrigation, and developing robust localized weather-advisory networks.
