Pakistani salt exporter to install solar-storage system to cut diesel reliance

In a move towards industrial energy independence, HubSalt, a Pakistani manufacturer and exporter of salt products, has signed an agreement with China’s LIVOLTEK to deploy a hybrid solar and battery storage system at its facility.

The project involves the installation of a 1.44 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) system integrated with a 2.35 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS).

According to a statement, the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract has been awarded to Optimisen Pvt Ltd, which is spearheading the project in collaboration with its Chinese technology partner, LIVOLTEK.

The initiative is expected to significantly reduce the Karachi-based company’s reliance on imported diesel.

HubSalt Chief Executive Officer Ismail Suttar termed the project a “transformative step” for the company and a benchmark for the wider industrial sector.

“By integrating advanced renewable technologies, we are not only improving our operational resilience but also setting a benchmark for clean energy adoption in Pakistan’s industrial sector,” Suttar said.

LIVOLTEK’s Asia Pacific Director, Max Ma and the CEO of Optimisen also underscored the significance of the green energy project and reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring its completion ahead of schedule.

There has been a growing shift towards alternative energy sources in Pakistan, especially solar, which has become increasingly popular among residential and commercial sectors.

Previously operating entirely off-grid on diesel generators, HubSalt, which produces 500 tonnes of Himalayan pink salt daily, would transition to a hybrid energy model. The company estimates the project will displace approximately 360,000 litres of diesel annually.

The environmental impact is also significant, with the project expected to offset more than 2,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually.
