Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal Urges Pak–US Partnership to Tackle Climate Change and Agricultural Resilience

ISLAMABAD — Terming climate change as one of the defining challenges of our time, Federal Minister for Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives Prof. Ahsan Iqbal has called for a strategic partnership between Pakistani and American universities, agricultural research institutions, and government agencies.

The proposed alliance aims to accelerate agricultural innovation, develop weather-resilient crops, and protect Pakistan’s future food and water security.

Building Climate Resilience Through Innovation

Speaking on the urgent need for joint action, Minister Ahsan Iqbal highlighted that despite contributing less than 1% to global greenhouse gas emissions, Pakistan remains among the nations most vulnerable to climate-induced disasters.

To mitigate these risks, the proposed Pak–US partnership will focus on:

  • 🌾 Weather-Resilient Agriculture: Developing crop varieties and rootstocks resistant to severe heatwaves, droughts, and erratic flooding.
  • 🧬 Biotechnology & Precision Farming: Leveraging advanced biotechnology, digital extension services, and modern farming techniques to optimize yields.
  • 🚰 Water Security: Modernizing water management practices to safeguard national resources against accelerating climate impacts.
  • 🎓 Academic Collaboration: Expanding opportunities under initiatives like the US–Pakistan Knowledge Corridor to facilitate joint research between Pakistani scholars and world-class US institutions.

The Minister noted that modernizing agriculture and building climate adaptation strategies are central components of the government’s flagship URAAN Pakistan framework, which seeks to transform the country into a competitive, knowledge-based economy.

“The strength of the United States lies in the strength of its universities,” remarked Prof. Ahsan Iqbal. “By forging deeper research links across higher education, agricultural institutes, and government bodies, we can turn environmental challenges into opportunities for innovation, food security, and sustainable economic growth.”

The initiative aims to establish joint research hubs, upgrade centralized research laboratories, and reinforce the entire agricultural supply chain to ensure long-term resilience for Pakistan’s agrarian economy.
