ISLAMABAD — Pakistan and Spain have agreed to step up bilateral cooperation across higher education, sustainable agriculture, early childhood development, and cultural exchange.
The commitment was reaffirmed during a formal meeting between Federal Minister for Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives Prof. Ahsan Iqbal and Spanish Ambassador to Pakistan H.E. Carlos Aragon.

1. Academic Ties & Shared Architectural Heritage
- Institutional Partnership: The two sides reviewed a draft Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) establishing a collaborative framework between the University of Narowal and Spain’s Universidad de Granada. The partnership focuses on student/faculty exchange programs and joint research initiatives.
- Al-Andalus Connection: Minister Ahsan Iqbal pointed out that the architectural design of the University of Narowal draws direct inspiration from the historical Al-Andalus era and Granada, reflecting a shared cultural legacy.
2. Agricultural Technology & Olive Cultivation
Highlighting Pakistan’s push to curb its high reliance on imported edible oils, the Planning Minister invited Spanish investment and technical expertise in:
- Olive Cultivation & Agribusiness: Leveraging Spain’s global leadership in olive oil production to scale up value addition in Pakistan.
- Target Regions: Expanding modern agricultural technology specifically across Balochistan, the merged districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), and the Potohar region.

- Kartarpur Sahib Invitation: Minister Ahsan Iqbal extended a formal invitation to Ambassador Aragon to visit Kartarpur Sahib, highlighting it as a global centerpiece for interfaith harmony and religious tourism.
4. Early Childhood Development Conference
- Global Summit in Pakistan: Building on Pakistan’s participation in international forums on child welfare, the Minister proposed co-hosting the upcoming International Conference on Early Childhood Development in Pakistan alongside Spain and UNICEF.
- Royal Invitation: An invitation was formally extended to Her Majesty Queen Letizia of Spain to attend the event.
