HOUSTON: Federal Minister for Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives, Professor Ahsan Iqbal Chaudhary, visited Rice University to engage with Pakistani students pursuing higher education in the United States, calling on them to lead Pakistan’s transition toward a knowledge-based economy.

Addressing the students, the Minister urged the youth to become active partners in the national mission to win the “Maarka-e-Maeeshat” (the battle for economic sovereignty) through innovation, education, and entrepreneurship. He emphasized that Pakistan’s greatest asset is its talented youth, whose global exposure will be instrumental in building a competitive economic future.

Key Priorities & Strategic Initiatives

During his comprehensive address, Minister Ahsan Iqbal highlighted several landmark initiatives driving Pakistan’s current development model:

• A Shift in National Narrative: Pakistan is transitioning from a security-centric framework to a knowledge and innovation-driven model, where technology and research define national competitiveness.
• Economic Stabilization: Under Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, structural reforms and fiscal discipline have successfully restored investor confidence and stabilized macroeconomic fundamentals.
• The “Uraan Pakistan” Agenda: A long-term transformation strategy aimed at shifting the nation from a consumption-driven economy to a productivity-led powerhouse, targeting a US$1 trillion economy by 2035 via exports and human capital.
• Future Technologies: Direct state investment is being channeled into strategic sectors, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), Cybersecurity, Robotics, Big Data, Quantum Technologies, Space Sciences, and Biotechnology.
• The Pakistan–U.S. Knowledge Corridor: Reviving deep academic collaborations to link universities, research institutions, and startup ecosystems between both nations.

Major Breakthroughs in U.S. Engagements

The Minister shared several high-impact outcomes from his recent official engagements in the United States, which include:

• Robotic Surgery Training: A collaborative partnership with the University of Illinois Chicago.
• Academic Expansion: A proposal to establish an Illinois Institute of Technology campus in Pakistan and expanded doctoral opportunities with the University of Chicago.
• Silicon Valley Inflow: Plug and Play Tech Center, one of the world’s leading startup accelerators, has agreed to launch operations in Pakistan, opening global mentorship and venture capital pipelines for local startups.

Concluding his address, Minister Iqbal categorized overseas Pakistanis as vital strategic partners. He urged the diaspora to actively mentor young entrepreneurs, bridge research collaborations, and leverage their global networks to accelerate Pakistan’s economic progress.
