ISLAMABAD — Pakistan has recorded a major breakthrough on the global digital stage, jumping 27 places in the International Telecommunication Union’s (ITU) ICT Development Index (IDI) for 2026.
According to the newly released global report, Pakistan’s IDI score surged from 56.4 in 2025 to 67.7 in 2026. This represents an impressive 20% relative improvement, underscoring the rapid expansion of the country’s telecom infrastructure, internet affordability, and digital readiness.
The Anatomy of the Leap
The ITU’s highly rigorous assessment methodology, updated in 2023, tracks global progress across two main metrics: Universal Connectivity (infrastructure availability) and Meaningful Connectivity (affordability, reliability, and safety).
Pakistan’s standout performance in the 2026 report is driven by specific structural advancements:
- Connectivity Pillar Surge: The country recorded a substantial 22.8-point improvement in its baseline connectivity index.
- Meaningful Connectivity Score: Pakistan achieved a benchmark score of 79, indicating substantial progress in ensuring that citizens have reliable, high-speed, and regular access to online resources.
- Infrastructure Optimization: Increased fiber-optic density and expanded mobile broadband penetration across rural and urban territories.
Driving the Inclusive Digital Economy
Reacting to the global index update, Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja emphasized that this upward trajectory aligns directly with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s national vision for a fully digitized economy.
The ministry underscored that these enhanced indicators will serve as a strong catalyst for multiple socio-economic sectors:
