PAKISTAN AND CORNELL UNIVERSITY EXPLORE DEEPER TIES IN AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH AND HIGHER EDUCATION

NEW YORK / ISLAMABAD — Federal Minister for Planning, Development & Special Initiatives, Prof. Ahsan Iqbal, visited the Cornell University College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) to explore strategic partnerships aimed at advancing higher education, technological innovation, and sustainable agricultural practices in Pakistan.

During a productive meeting with the Dean of CALS, Prof. Dr. Lori Leonard, the Minister highlighted Pakistan’s aggressive roadmap toward developing a knowledge-based, innovation-driven economy.

Key Pillars of Collaborative Focus

The discussions identified several critical sectors where Cornell’s academic excellence can synergize with Pakistan’s development initiatives:

  • Agricultural Sciences & Technology: Modernizing traditional farming frameworks through cutting-edge practices.
  • Biotechnology & AI: Integrating advanced computational tools and biological research into main-sector development.
  • Climate Change: Formulating strategies and resilient methodologies to combat climate-induced threats to agriculture.
  • Research & Innovation Partnerships: Bridging academic research with institutional execution.

Strengthening Human Capital: PhDs and Fulbrights

Prof. Ahsan Iqbal underscored Pakistan’s ongoing commitment to investing in human capital through marquee initiatives like the US–Pakistan Knowledge Corridor. This ambitious program targets the facilitation of 10,000 PhD scholarships for Pakistani scholars in top-tier American universities.

Furthermore, enhanced public support for Fulbright scholarships has firmly positioned Pakistan among the world’s leading beneficiaries of this prestigious academic exchange.
